Can RDI help my child and family?

RDI is not just for those considered low functioning, high functioning, ( not thrilled with the terms) young children, tweens, teens and adults, etc. Every single individual deserves a chance to revisit their own development! I have learned so much from all my clients and what this means is even the children who are non verbal have ALOT to say and they do think about their incompetence in situations. Anxiety from this incompetence impacts the majority of individuals on the spectrum. In many therapies, while well meaning, they do not take this into account and they think general knowledge…what we call static skills, can be successful. The problem is interactions never go as planned, there is not a set script for true authentic interactions. This creates even more incompetent feelings which in turns teaches the individual to turn away from interactions because they are just too unpredictable. Trying to build on a foundation that is not yet there and then wonder why nothing generalizes. This work on general knowledge does not even touch the deficit in personal knowledge which is how we all make sense of the world and how each interaction has PERSONAL relevance to our life

Semantic knowledge is information, Experience knowledge is how we encode and learn from our experiences, Agentic is our own self awareness and becoming knowledge is the knowledge we gain and use for who we become in the future… All these we do with little effort in our neurology, yet our children with Autism Struggle with all except Semantic. What does this look like?  Amazing memorization ability for information and facts.  Weakness in sharing experiences and reflection on not only other perspectives but on the emotions involved along with how to tie the experience together with past experiences to make decisions for future decisions.  This is important because without Personal knowledge,  the world is a confusing place without the ability to reflect.  Each day is full of brand new challenges that make little sense. The ability to reflect is an important process for exploring and examining ourselves and our reactions, experiences and interactions.  It helps us to gain knowledge on how to more forward.

THIS knowledge is for every single individual!
